My name is Michael Coghill and I am the bandleader and business manager for the Rhythm Kings. This page was created for you – brides and grooms planning your wedding event and considering the Rhythm Kings for your live entertainment. Obviously, this is a very special day for you and I think it requires extra special attention from everyone involved. It helps to have a wealth of experience to draw from (we’ve performed at over 200 weddings over the past 10 years) so let me share with you what we do to ensure a wonderfully successful reception!

First of all, let’s go over the basics:

Time-wise we cover a total of four hours by performing three one-hour sets with two half-hour breaks. Therefore, the contract time will say 7-11 p.m. or 8-12 p.m. or whatever four hour period you choose. In our years of experience, very few weddings go according to schedule so we simply guarantee that we will get three hours of music in that four hour time span any way that we can – i.e., you schedule breaks whenever you want for the cake-cutting, toasts, bouquet and garter toss, etc., and we will work around it! It’s your day – we’re just here to make it as smooth and fun as possible!

All we need from your venue is a stage (or stage area) and electricity. Usually, two twenty-amp outlets on separate circuits will work. We will bring all PA and lighting necessary and appropriate for the room. Our staging area is usually 12x20 ft., but we can work with 12x16 ft. if space is a problem.

We will play CD’s on breaks to maintain a good energy level. You also have the option of having your own special CD’s played.

We typically dress formal (tuxedos for men and an evening dress for the lady) so let us know if you want anything different.

Now let’s go through a typical course of events leading up to the reception and then the reception itself. We’ll skip through the obvious contract part and get to the actual planning that involves the band.

We will ask for the venue’s contact name and number so that we can handle the last minute arrangements for load-in and set-up and verify stage and electricity requirements. You’ve got enough to do – we will take care of this.

If you have a song request that is not on our song list, just let us know at least 60 days before the date. If you have a CD or sheet music, send it to us and we will be glad to learn it for you. (for example, you might have a special song you want played for your first dance or father/daughter dance)

About 30 days in advance, we will mail or fax our current song list. We’ll ask that you look over it and mark 4-5 songs that you absolutely LOVE so we will make sure to include them in our set-lists that night. Also mark 4-5 that you absolutely HATE so that we can leave those out. In our experience, the music that pleases everyone in every age group is the classic dance, disco and soul from all eras and we try to stick to what works best. Our goal is to have your guests dancing all night long. Now, if you have a younger group of people and want us to mix in some of the more current material – just let us know and we will gladly do so!

Around the same time (30 days in advance) we would like a rough schedule of events from you if possible. For example, what time you are arriving, when you will have your first dance and father/daughter dance, when the cake cutting will happen, etc. Also, if we are announcing the bridal party, please give a complete list with pronunciations for any not-so-obvious names.

On the day of the reception, we will load-in and begin set-up approximately two hours before the venue doors open. That way we ensure we are completely set before ANY of your guests enter the room.

I will get with your venue contact or the wedding coordinator to go over any final details or last minute changes. I will also confirm the band’s food and beverage arrangements.

Unless you specifically request otherwise, we start the evening with a “dinner set”. That basically means we play some nice background music while your guests mix, mingle and eat. This set includes some light jazz instrumentals featuring the horns and guitar mixed with classics by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and similar artists. Most definitely this music will appeal to the grandparents and older guests who prefer songs from a different era. Remember, we want to make EVERYONE happy!

By the time we start our second set, people are finished eating and generally ready to get the party started. So we do just that, kick off with non-stop classic dance, disco and soul. We’ll also slow it down once or twice per set to let them catch their breath and get a little closer.

Well, that pretty much covers everything. I hope this information helps you.
